Mobile in-app screen targeting

Overview

In this article, you'll learn how to display an in-app message only when a contact reaches a specific screen in your mobile app.

Screen targeting is set per message. Each in-app message has its own list of screens where it can appear. Target one message to a single screen, target the next to several, and leave a third open to any location — every message is independent, and you can change any of them at any time without an app release or a developer request.

The message displays only when the contact is on one of the screens you selected.

Before you begin

  • Screen targeting must be enabled for your account, per platform. Please contact your CSM or submit a support ticket.
  • Your app must run Cordial mobile SDK 4.25.0 or later on Android, or 5.8.1 or later on iOS.
  • Screen targeting works out of the box in native iOS and Android apps. Your developers can optionally rename screens or limit which ones appear. Learn more about screen tracking setup here.
  • The locations you can choose from are the screens contacts visited in your app over the last 30 days.

Use case

Target a free shipping offer to your Cart screen, so contacts see it while they're deciding whether to check out.

Target a loyalty enrollment prompt to your Order Confirmation screen, so it reaches contacts right after a purchase.

Select locations for an in-app message

  1. Navigate to Messages and open your in-app message.
  2. In the message settings, scroll to Location Targeting. Each platform has its own field — iOS location and Android location — set to Any location by default.

  3. Select a platform's field to open the location picker. Screens are reported separately for iOS and Android, so each platform has its own list.
  4. Search or sort to find a screen. Locations are sorted by View Count so your busiest screens appear first, and Last Viewed shows when each was most recently viewed.

  5. Select a location to add it. Add as many as you need, then close the picker. Remove a location with the × next to its name.

  6. Select Save.

How a targeted message displays

  • The message displays once, on the first targeted screen the contact visits.
  • If the contact never visits a targeted screen before the message expires, it doesn't display.
  • Screen targeting controls where a message appears, not who receives it. Your audience rules still determine who's eligible.
